How NFT Royalties Are Calculated

NFT royalties are a percentage of each secondary market sale paid to the original creator. Royalties are set at mint and are enforced by smart contract on supporting marketplaces.

Royalty per Sale = Sale Price × Royalty Rate %
Platform Fee per Sale = Sale Price × Platform Fee % (2–5% depending on marketplace)
Creator Net per Sale = Royalty per Sale (marketplace may deduct its own cut from royalty)
Monthly Royalties = Avg Secondary Sales per Month × Avg Sale Price × Royalty Rate

As of 2026, several major NFT marketplaces (including OpenSea) have moved to optional royalties. Blur and other platforms may not enforce creator royalties. Only royalty-enforcing platforms (like Magic Eden and select others) guarantee payment.
