How Blood Alcohol Content Is Calculated

Uses the Widmark formula, the most widely accepted method for estimating BAC from alcohol consumption.

Alcohol (grams) = Drinks × Oz per Drink × 28.35 × 0.789
Peak BAC = (Alcohol in grams ÷ (Body weight in grams × Widmark r)) × 100
Current BAC = Peak BAC − (0.015 × Hours Elapsed)
Hours to Sober = Current BAC ÷ 0.015

Widmark r factor is 0.68 for males and 0.55 for females. The body metabolizes alcohol at approximately 0.015 BAC per hour. Food slows absorption and reduces peak BAC.
